Considered lost for 40 years until it was found in the archives of the Swedish television station SVT, Jimi Hendrix “Live in Stockholm” live show was recorded on January 9, 1969, at the Konserthuset, Sweden. The video of this concert shows Hendrix and his band, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, delivering a powerful set of songs, including some of his classics such as “Fire”, “Hey Joe”, and “Voodoo Child”.
The video captures the essence of a Jimi Hendrix live show: unpredictable, spontaneous, and improvisational. He would often interact with the audience, make jokes, and play with his guitar in unconventional ways, His bandmates, Noel Redding on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums, were equally skilled and versatile, providing a solid and dynamic rhythm section that complemented Hendrix’s virtuosity.
But in at this point in time, the band was barely on speaking terms. They had not played in six weeks and, all, especially Jimi, were exhausted. The set list was far from ambitious: four originals songs, three covers.
To quote Jimi Himself “we’re going to jam tonight and see what happens. Hope you don’t mind’.
In a show full of technical difficulties, with a band that would break up a few months later, Jimi’s performance was pretty raw that day. But still, it gave us a strong & memorable performance of “Red House”.
A bad day for Jimi is still a good day for music.
